Classification

Algona is a non-charter code City governed by Title 35A of the Revised Code of Washington.

Form of Government – Mayor-Council (RCW 35A.12)

The City of Algona is a Mayor-Council form of government that consists of an elected Mayor, who serves as the City's Chief Administrative Officer, and a five-member Council elected at large.  The Council’s role is that of a legislative policy-making body that determines not only the local laws that regulate community life, but also determines public policy and give direction to the Mayor to administer the affairs of the City in a businesslike and prudent manner.  Of Washington's 281 cities and towns, 227 (81%) operate under the Mayor-Council form of government.

Algona’s Council acts as a body and is collectively responsible for establishing policy, adopting the annual budget, and providing vision and goals to the Mayor and Departments through the adoption of several plans such as the Comprehensive Plan, Storm Water Management Plan, Water Management Plan, and Sewer Management Plan.

The City Council is elected to serve four-year terms.  At the beginning of each year the Council elects a Mayor Pro-Tem to serve a one-year term to serve as Council President, presiding over Council workshop sessions and to serve in the temporary absence of the Mayor.
